Dipak Patel’s Coaching Tips
Pre-season checklist for batsman
Grip
• Firm top hand and loose bottom hand, V’s formed by the thumb and index finger down the centre of the bat.
• From the front shoulder, hips, feet side on.
• Bent front elbow pointing at the bowler and back elbow to the wicket keeper, forming a “cradle”
Stance
• Head/eyes level over off stump.
• Chin resting alongside the front shoulder.
• Weight distributed more on the front leg, sight lean forward with the upper body towards the umpire.
• Bat backswing straight back over off stump.
Cradle
• The “CRADLE” is the basis for all straight bat shots.
• This also incorporates the grip and stance.
SEASON PREPARATION
• Work loads, throw downs, net sessions and open wicket batting
• Feet movement, hand and eye co-ordination
DRILLS FOR PRACTICING FRONT AND BACK FOOT SHOTS:
Solid Base
• A solid base is required for all front and back foot shots.
• Weight on the ball of the feet.
• Training with a partner, throw downs are the best form of practice for early season.
• Get your partner throw under arm balls so you can train your body to move into correct positions for front foot shots and over arm throws for back foot shots.
• Practice all your shots in a controlled environment before moving into net sessions.
• Moving into net sessions: working on balance and leaving as many balls that don’t have to be played.
• Mentally focusing on decision making and playing each ball on its merits.
